Let's dive deeper into the creative world of Salty Melon Prints. We won't just uncover the brand; we'll explore the motivations and stories that come to life through Sahra's imaginative lens.
What inspired you to start Salty Melon Prints?
I had just started freelancing as a graphic designer when I noticed the Valentine's Day cards hitting the shelves in my local supermarket. They were the same designs I'd seen 20 years ago—mass-produced by overseas companies. It struck me that this was something I could do myself. I had the skills and the knowledge to create cards, especially since I'd always struggled to find ones I truly liked to give to ones I love.
How did you come up with the name for your brand?
I actually already had the name registered. I had been planning for years to do downloadable prints, something that may still happen one day. But the name was a bit of fun, something memorable. There are a lot of beach/sea elements in the designs & literally who doesn’t like watermelon?!
Can you walk us through your creative process and how you design such epic greeting cards?
Lot’s of doodling, sketching & seeing what works. I’ve learnt not to judge some of my designs too harshly because some that I’ve not been so sure on have been my best sellers.
What role does sustainability play in your designs?
I knew that if I ever did a product-based business it had to tread lightly on our planet. So I love creating things that are fun & loud but are recycled & environmentally friendly.
How do you decide on the themes for your collections?
Being just a one-woman show I don’t go all in on every “season”. I like to keep the range small and reduce wastage. I just did a special charity card for Christmas which was really special. My designs can be good all-rounders and used for multiple occasions.
What has been your proudest moment since starting Salty Melon Prints?
So many, but I think raising money for Baby Give Back with my holiday card is something I’m really proud of.
Where do you draw inspiration for your quirky designs?
Everywhere, lot’s of Pinterest boards, lots of cool branding. It can be something completely unrelated to what I’m designing but if I like the colours or text style it may inspire me to create something new and fun.
What challenges have you faced as a brand owner?
Realising it’s marketing and selling which is the hardest part. The daily push to keep getting your product out there.
How do you envision the future of Salty Melon Prints?
Stocked all over Australia & doing really fun collabs with cool brands.
What's one piece of advice you would give to aspiring designers?
I still feel like an inspiring designer, so just start! When it all seems overwhelming just do the next thing on the list.
